With a couple of recent accidents resulting in deaths in Antarctica it has naturally resulted in discussion.
This thread was initially about the Nov 2022 Quark Zodiac accident resulting in 2 deaths. It then morphed into discussion about the Viking Polaris incidents - first a broken leg during a zodiac accident, followed by damage to the ship itself on its return to Ushuaia when hit by a rogue wave. Resulting in damage to a row of lower deck cabins, a death and several injuries.
Report on marine casualty involving the cruise ship ‘Viking Polaris’ south-east of Cape Horn, 29 November 2022
The video embedded in the report includes cctv from inside and outside the ship. Interesting seeing the force from a corridor when the wave hits. Internal walls just buckle.
The 91 page PDF - has the full investigation into the zodiac accident that initially caused the ship to head back to Ushuaia.
Personally I think they are building these ships with passengers views more of a priority over safety. Just my own opinion.
